Think Cleaning Is Hard? Think Again.

Cleaning can seem like a difficult task at first; however, there may be some things you might or might not be doing that may help you save time.

Cleaning as you go

Once you use something you try to clean it right then and there, whether its cooking or showering, the best time to clean things is right after you've done something. For example, the best time to clean the bathroom would be after you shower since everything is already wet. This helps the dirt come off easily.

You might be rushing

At first, cleaning the counters or wiping your windows might seem like a quick and easy job, but doing it quickly might be causing you extra work. These things take time, and if you are cleaning your house to quickly, you might be leaving behind more work for later. Its better to wait for an opportune moment rather that to do it now because you have five minutes before you have to go to work.

You might not be using the right tools

Before you begin cleaning whatever it is you need to clean, be sure you know you are doing whats right. A quick glance at a product can help save time or even prevent you from messing up in the long run. Sometimes, the product that was recommended by a friend can be the wrong one, worsening your mess.

Easter aftermath? Let's get cleaning!

We all know that Easter is a fun holiday with your family, but we also know how messy it can get. Here are some tips on cleaning up the mess after the fun has ended and everyone is gone.

Wine Stains? No Problem.

This is for cleaning wine stains off of fabrics.

To clean this mess up, we're going to need:
  • Salt
  • Cotton cloth
  • Bowl
  • Rubber band
  • Hot water
  • Washing machine
Dab at the stain with a damp white cotton cloth to absorb any excess wine. (Rubbing is the wrong move because it will actually set the stain.) Slide a bowl under the fabric, centering the stain over the bowl. Secure with a large rubber band. Coat the stain with a generous amount of salt and let sit for at least five minutes to allow the salt to start absorbing the liquid. Keep in mind: The sooner salt is applied, the easier it will be to lift the stain. Slowly—and carefully—pour boiling water over the stain from a height of at least eight inches. (Pouring from this height gives you enough force to flush out the stain.) Then, using the hottest water setting, launder the fabric.

Spill food coloring? We've got you covered.

This is for cleaning the spills that occurred on some upholstery.

To clean this one up, we'll be using:
  • Detergent
  • Ammonia
  • White vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol
Lets begin by mixing one teaspoon of liquid dish washing detergent and one tablespoon of ammonia with two cups of warm water. (Caution: Never mix chlorine bleach and ammonia – fumes are hazardous) Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with the detergent/ammonia solution and then blot until the liquid is absorbed. Continue blotting until the stain is absorbed into the cloth. If the stain remains, mix one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Sponge the stain with the detergent/vinegar solution and blot until the liquid is absorbed. Keep going until the stain disappears or is no longer absorbed into the cloth.

New Year Resolutions for Your Home!

A few tips from us to you ... for 2016!

Lose Weight – De-Clutter and Organize your Home

  • Don’t try to do too much in too little time...   Organizing takes effort, and it’s not the most exciting task you can take on for a weekend. Make sure you’re giving yourself enough time and not pushing yourself to finish in an unreasonable amount of time. You’re more likely to get burnt out.

  • Don’t procrastinate donating  Do you have a donation pile? Or maybe you have a few things in your closets that you know are going to be donated eventually, you just haven’t gotten there yet. Don’t procrastinate boxing them up and donating them. You can always go in shifts to your local Goodwill – don’t feel like you have to donate everything in one go.

  • Organize first, buy organizational materials second  Many individuals buy boxes and tubs, hoping it will help them get organized, but they end up not fitting their needs. Get organized first, and then determine what you need to purchase after. You’ll save money and have a better system.

Get Fit!  Keep your appliances running

  • Use Energy Efficient Appliances Even doing something as simple as changing your light bulbs to compact fluorescents can help you to save 75% of the energy you were burning earlier. Upgrading your larger appliances, like your washer, dryer or oven can save you even more money and energy.

  • Clean and Maintain your Appliances The more you clean your appliances, the better they run. For example, if you change our your HVAC filters regularly (like every 1-3 months) your system will be able to push that air through the system easier, making sure the motor doesn’t work too hard.

  • Make sure Air isn’t Escaping  Warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer can escape through less insulated doors, windows and ducts. Make sure you’re caulking and repairing any places that could become drafts.

Spend Less, Save More: Get a home warranty

You can spend less money on your home’s systems and appliances, and save thousands of dollars with a home warranty. A home warranty covers repairs and replacements on your home’s systems and appliances (such as the HVAC system, oven, dishwasher, electrical and plumbing systems, etc.) for a $60 service call fee. So if you have a system or appliance in your home fail from normal wear and tear, all you have to do is pay $60 to have it repaired or replaced. Not only would you save money, but you’d also spend a lot less money. Most homeowners spend 1-4% of their home’s value on repairs and replacements per year. With a home warranty, you can reduce that percentage significantly.
